Terms of Service

Effective 25 October 2026.

1. Who you are contracting with

Splitshot Weather (“we”, “us”) is operated by Christopher Vrooman, a sole proprietor in the State of Colorado, United States. These terms govern your use of the Splitshot Weather API and the splitshotweather.com website (together, the “service”).

By creating an account, issuing an API key, or sending a request to the API, you agree to these terms. If you are agreeing on behalf of a company, you confirm you are authorised to bind it.

2. What the service is

We publish United States weather data as map tiles and JSON over HTTPS: composite radar reflectivity, rainfall accumulation, satellite-detected lightning, surface wind, point forecasts, and historical conditions. The data is derived from public United States government sources and rendered by us.

We may add, change, or withdraw individual layers and endpoints. Where a change would break a documented, working integration, we will give at least 30 days’ notice by email to the address on your account, except where a change is forced on us by an upstream data provider or is needed urgently for security.

3. Your account and your API key

One account, one active API key. Creating a new key immediately stops the previous one working.

Your key is a credential and you are responsible for it. Requests authenticated with your key are treated as yours, including the requests of anyone who obtains it. Do not publish it in client-side code, a public repository, or a mobile app binary where it can be extracted. If you believe a key has leaked, rotate it from your account page immediately and tell us.

You must give us an email address that reaches you. Notices about your trial ending, your key being blocked, and changes to these terms are sent there.

4. Plans, trials, and billing

Every account starts with a 14-day trial of up to 50,000 requests, with no card required. The trial clock starts when you create an API key, not when you sign up. When the trial ends, or the 50,000 requests are used, the key stops serving requests until you move to a paid plan.

PlanPriceIncluded requests
Starter$29 / month1,000,000 per calendar month
Growth$99 / month5,000,000 per calendar month

Paid plans are billed monthly in advance and renew automatically until cancelled. Prices are in United States dollars and exclude any taxes you are responsible for.

Requests that return an error are not billed. A 401, 404, or 429 does not count against your included requests.

We do not bill overage. If a paid plan passes its included requests we will contact you to agree a plan that fits rather than invoicing you for the excess. We may, after telling you, limit or suspend a key that remains substantially over its allowance.

You can cancel at any time; cancellation takes effect at the end of the paid month and we do not refund part months. If you believe you have been billed in error, write to us within 60 days and we will put it right.

5. Acceptable use

You may display our tiles and data in your own application or website, including commercial ones. You may not:

Caching tiles inside your application for normal performance reasons is fine and expected. If you are unsure whether a use is allowed, ask us — we would rather answer than enforce.

6. Accuracy, coverage, and safety

This service must not be used for safety-of-life decisions. It is not designed, tested, or certified for aviation, marine navigation, emergency management, severe-weather warning, or any other purpose where inaccurate, delayed, or missing data could contribute to injury, death, or serious property damage. Official warnings for the United States come from the National Weather Service, and nothing here replaces them.

Weather data is an estimate. Radar misses things, gauges disagree, forecasts are wrong, and upstream feeds fail. We publish what we receive and render; we do not warrant that any value is correct, current, or complete.

Coverage has known limits, which we state plainly rather than bury:

7. Availability

There is no uptime guarantee and no service level agreement on any plan. We do not offer credits for downtime. We monitor freshness and aim to degrade gracefully — serving the last good frame rather than a blank one — but we do not promise availability, latency, or a maximum frame age.

If you need a contractual uptime commitment, talk to us before you build rather than after.

8. Where the data comes from

The underlying observations and forecasts come from United States government sources, including the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration and the National Weather Service. That source data is in the public domain. Our rendering, colour treatment, tile scheme, APIs, and documentation are ours.

We ask that you not represent our output as official government product, and that you do not imply NOAA, the NWS, or any government body endorses your application.

9. Suspension and termination

You may stop using the service and delete your account at any time.

We may suspend a key immediately where it is being used in a way that threatens the service or other customers, where payment fails, or where use breaches section 5. For anything that is not urgent we will contact you first. We may terminate an account for a material breach that is not fixed within 14 days of us telling you about it.

On termination your key stops working. Sections 6, 10, and 12 survive.

10. Limitation of liability

The service is provided “as is” and “as available”, without warranties of any kind, express or implied, including merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, and non-infringement.

To the maximum extent the law allows, we are not liable for indirect, incidental, special, consequential, or punitive damages, nor for lost profits, lost revenue, lost data, or business interruption, however caused.

Our total liability arising out of or relating to the service is limited to the amount you paid us in the three months before the event giving rise to the claim. On a free trial, that amount is zero.

Some jurisdictions do not allow certain exclusions, in which case the limits above apply as far as they are permitted.

11. Changes to these terms

We may update these terms. For changes that materially reduce your rights or increase your obligations, we will email the address on your account at least 30 days before they take effect, and continuing to use the service after that date means you accept them. Price changes do not apply to a month you have already paid for.

12. Governing law and disputes

These terms are governed by the laws of the State of Colorado, United States, without regard to its conflict of laws rules. The state and federal courts located in Colorado have exclusive jurisdiction, and both of us consent to venue there.

Before filing anything, please write to support@splitshotweather.com. Most disagreements are a misunderstanding about a number and are faster to fix in an email.
